How to become instantly more likeable

Principle 5 - Smile

Perhaps there is no other piece of advice that is as universally accepted, as profound in it’s impact, and incredibly simple to apply than to smile.  By making a mindful effort to smile more, you’ll find that more people are willing to engage with you, that people will share in greater detail, and that you will be perceived in a positive light by your friends, family, co-workers, and colleagues.

4 Ways to turn that frown upside down

  • Be Genuine – There is no need to go over the top.  If you are a person who isn’t always a bubbly smiler, it would be weird if you all of a sudden started smiling all the time.  Do what feels genuine and do it in a way that feels comfortable to you.

  • Fake it Till Ya Make it (A little bit) – Sometimes you aren’t having the best day.  On those days, it’s important to honor your feeling, but to also understand and be mindful that by smiling more and engaging with more people, it can have a positive impact on your mood and your day!

  • Practice – Yes, it does sound weird, but it works.  Many successful sales professionals have a mirror by their phone to remind themselves to smile  (…and yes, you can hear a smile!).  If smiling isn’t second nature to you, there is nothing wrong with practicing in front of a mirror.  Before you know it, it will be a natural part of your every-day interactions with people.

  • Be Mindful  – By now, we know that smiling is important and it may even be common sense, but it isn’t always common practice.  By being mindful in your approach, you can set the right intentions for the day which should include some sort of reminder to smile.
